Fishing nets - Active fishing gear
Beach seine nets
products marked by this sign are also suitable for scientific research
- used for active fishing in ponds, rivers, reservoirs and other not drained water bodies
- beach seine net samples fish near the shore
Fish are sampled – caught by hauling the net from one or both ends
Usage:
- fishing in non-drained ponds, reservoirs, lakes, rivers etc.
- removing part of fish stock from non-drained ponds
- obtaining samples of fish
Advantages:
- quick flexible usage where needed
- ease of use with low demand of manpower (minimum 2 – 4 fishermen)
- effective fishing
- caught fish suffer minimal damage
- possible to control amount of fish caught
Design:
- PA – polyamide, PES – polyester knotless net with square or diamond-shaped mesh
- mesh size: 2 - 30 mm
- thread diameter: 0.01 – 1.4 mm (technical specification 210/4 – 210/28, see details of net swatch)
- without bag – one-depth net – net has uniform depth on its all length
- with bag – two(three)-depth net – net has deeper core
- the upper line has floats
- the lower line has lead line attached
Beach seine nets – used for both fry and adult fish sampling
Usage
- used for sampling – fry and smaller fish species (up to 10 cm)
- used for species composition and abundance assessment
Design
- polyester net with mesh size 2 mm
- polyamide net with mesh size 4, 6 and 10 mm
- thread diameter 0.5 – 1.4 mm – (210/4 – 210/28)
- see table below for recommended lengths, heights and design
- light beach seine nets designed for field
- 10x3 cm floats
- Lead line 80 g/m
For the beach seine net to be most effective, it is necessary to shrink the net edge to at least 2/3 from initial height.

Light design
For the beach seine net to be most effective, it is necessary to shrink the net edge to at least 2/3 from initial height
One-depth beach seine net
- uniform depth throughout its all length
Usage
- universal shape for all types of hauls
- suitable for all water bodies with structured-free gently-sloped banks
- disadvantage may be increased weight in case of large nets = larger effort needed during haul
- disadvantage of small nets may be fish escaping during haul techniques such as water – water and shore - water

Two-depth beach seine nets
- one half times deeper in center of the net
Usage
- useful shape for all kinds of hauls
- haul needs to be symmetric to the center
- useful for all small water bodies
- the advantage is low weight
- the advantage is high efficiency – minimal escaping fish

Three-depth beach seine nets – heavy design
- depth of the net sections have a ratio of 1:2:4
Three-depth beach seine nets have three increasing depths and are one and a half times deeper in the central part of the net.
Usage
- useful shape for all kinds of hauls
- haul has to be symmetric to the center
- useful net for all large water bodies
- the advantage
- low weight – possibility of using larger net
- high efficiency – minimal escaping fish

Beach seine net fishing in a commercial pond
Instructions:
- clear the net out of debris before fishing and check the netting for holes
- fold the net on the boat with floating line on one side, lead line on the other side, with the net core int he middle of the boat
- fold both lines at once on the boat
- net casts itself from a moving boat run by rowing or engine
- after casting, a haul is performed by pulling floating and lead lines towards the shore
- haul has to be continuous without interruptions
- fish gather in the deepest part of the net, in the core
- deeper core represents an advantage, as it is in three-depth beach seine net
- after the haul the net is fold and fish are grouped to one place
- fish catch is sorted and lifted on a special place
