Fishing nets - Passive fishing gear
Underlying nets
- careful fishing from pond, channel and fish storage ponds
Usage:
- fishing from drained ponds
- fishing part of the stock from a full pond
- usually used for fry and juvenile fish
- fishing in rearing pools and channels
- usually used for trout and other salmonids
- fish is kept in excellent condition
Advantages of an underlying net:
- fish is caught without unnecessary abrasion – damage
- fish stays in the water while being manipulated
- fish condition and oxygen content can be checked regularly
- correct use leads to catching nearly all fi sh at once
- not necessary to fi sh repeatedly as with beach seine net
Instructions for use:
- lay the net on the bottom of a water body
- ensure that the net does not cover the fish – net has to be below the fish
- anchor the net to the bottom with “handles”
- anchor the net to the shore in the case of use in channels and small ponds
- lay the net in a feeding spot when used in a full pond
- feed above the set net
- ensure that the net is spread below the fish in a drained pond
- spread the net below fi sh using ropes and boathooks
Attention – fish can die if they are caught beneath the net
Composition:
- polyamide knotless net with diamond-shaped mesh
- perimeter of the underlying net is strengthened with thick plaited cord
- rope is threaded through the perimeter, the thickness is in accordance to net size
- lead line is sewn to perimeter rope
- the underlying net is divided into regular strips with lead line
- the spacing of lead line depends on the net and mesh size
- lead line can be length- or width-oriented
- only one orientation is possible
